Check your copy in Windows.

  1. Find the downloaded installer.

    In File Explorer, hold Shift and right-click the file, then choose Copy as path.

  2. Open PowerShell.

    Type Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath and paste the copied path after the space. Keep the quotation marks around the path, then press Enter.

    The path above is an example. Use the location of your own download.

  3. Compare all 64 characters.

    The Hash value must match the expected SHA-256 above. Uppercase and lowercase letters mean the same thing. If it does not match, do not run that file. Download a fresh copy from this site and check again.

What Windows will ask when you install.

Pagekind is new and this preview is unsigned, so Windows shows its standard warnings for a program it has not seen before. The warnings are about the installer being unfamiliar, not about what it does. Here is the exact sequence and what each screen means.

  1. Your browser may hold the download.

    Edge and Chrome sometimes flag a new file as not commonly downloaded. Open the browser’s downloads list, choose Keep, then confirm Keep anyway.

  2. “Windows protected your PC.”

    A blue SmartScreen box appears showing only a Don’t run button. Select More info, then select Run anyway. SmartScreen shows this for any installer it has not yet seen downloaded many times.

  3. “Do you want to allow this app from an unknown publisher to make changes to your device?”

    Windows asks for administrator permission and names Pagekind-Setup.exe. Select Yes. Unknown publisher means this preview is unsigned; administrator access is needed because Pagekind installs for all users.

  4. The Pagekind setup window.

    Select Next, keep the suggested install location, then Install and Finish. Pagekind then appears in your Start menu.

Clicking through a prompt is not the same as turning protection off.

Allowing this one file is different from disabling SmartScreen, Microsoft Defender or User Account Control. Leave all of those switched on. If you would rather not run an unsigned installer at all, that is a reasonable choice — release validation is still in progress.

To remove Pagekind later, open Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps, select Pagekind and choose Uninstall. Uninstall Pagekind in the Start menu does the same thing.

A match checks the file, not every risk.

Integrity is different from publisher identity.

A matching checksum shows that your file matches the file described on this page. It does not independently prove the publisher’s identity or make an unsigned program safe. Someone who compromised both the installer and this page could replace both values.

The current installer is unsigned and production release checks are still in progress. Read the preview limitations before deciding whether to use it. Do not disable Windows security protections to install it.
